We acquired a large horde of gears(2900 lbs) (14,000 PIECES) from an auction in Massachusetts. These gears are new and have never been used and have now been organized, cataloged and stored with desiccant packs in our stockroom metal cabinets. These gears are very clean with no odor and no oil or grease residue.
All of these gears are 24 diametral pitch and 20° pressure angle.
The smallest three sizes have a 1/8″ bore
and the rest of them have a 1/4″ bore. Please note that the 1/8″ bore gears are around .1245″ diameter and will only go on a piece of 1/8″ drill rod with force. If you are using a rod from the hardware store chances are it will slide right on the shaft. Hardware store rod tends to be a few thousandths of an inch smaller than the nominal size.
It is very easy to expand this diameter by running an 1/8″ drill bit or chucking reamer through the bore. This smaller bore size is also easily reamed out to 3/16″ for use on some of the smaller PITTMAN brand and GLOBE brand motors.
All of these gears have a 304 alloy stainless steel set screw installed in the hub. This is nice to tighten down on a flat spot to lock the gear in place. The hub also features a small dimple indentation phased 90° from the setscrew to aid in drilling a pinhole to permanently pin the gear with a small tension pin or cotter pin. Another method is to use brass shaft and solder the gear permanently on to the shaft.
A few words about the surface finish on these gears. All of the photographs are actual photographs of a random cross-section of what these gears really look like. Some of them have a different look than others. Some have minor scratching or scuffing or small circular marks on the hub or other small marks in the finish. This in no way affects the performance of the gear. I guess it depends on what you are going to build with these but we used these to build a couple of small gearboxes and once we were finished we applied lithium grease to the gears and then put the top on the unit so the surface finish really didn’t matter. If your needs require these to have an even surface finish or luster you may want to spin them with a drill or a lathe and apply some 400 grit sandpaper or a Scotch-Brite pad to even the finish.
A few words about the quality of these gears. I don’t believe that these gears have an AGMA rating like some higher precision gears might have. These gears definitely would not be used for high precision instrumentation or avionics etc. These also would not be used in an application where a large amount of horsepower/torque is applied or high rpm’s. These look like they were manufactured for items like radio controlled cars or do it yourself projects, experimentation, prototyping, hobbyists, science fair projects, robot tinkering, steampunk, hand input power, Rube Goldberg etc. These gears may have a few thousandths of an inch of run out or wobble. They may also have very small inaccuracies in the concentricity between the bore and the pitch diameter. Not enough to effect the mesh as long as you add a few thousandths to your shaft spacing. After all you should have a little bit of backlash in the gear train to prevent them from meshing tight and causing premature wear.
Please note that none of the motors or measuring instruments are part of the sale. Those items are for illustration purposes only. The sale is just for the brass gears.
Most of the smaller gears weigh between 1 to 5 ounces where the larger gears way almost a pound. Once the weight goes over 16 ounces they are then upgraded to a priority flat rate envelope at no extra charge.  At that point the gears get placed in a cardboard box and then go in the padded flat rate envelope.
Once again if you pay before noon Eastern time we will mail your package the very same day ! !
